Yes, I do think my magazine attracts an audience due to some of the aspects and conventions I included that are used within other professional magazines. I tried to add as many unique selling points as possible to make us stand out from the others but I needed to have some conventions from other magazines to balance it out. For my front cover I had my model pointing towards the headline, which is something that you don’t really see. Due to seeing the artists pointing towards something the viewer would like to see what he’s pointing at and it also gives the impression that the headline is going to be based on him.  Furthermore the colour scheme used also grabs the viewers attention as the sell lines are written in black and gold which contrasts really well with the white background, to make my headline stand out I used the colour red which is looks really bright compared to the colours used. Finally I merged my logo with my masthead, which is also a unique selling point, this will catch the users attention, as there’s something on top of the ‘o’ in the masthead. Before I created my front cover I did a questionnaire and 17 out of 20 said that most magazines today form the same genre look similar in design. As a result I came up with a design that is different compared to other reggaeton/bachata magazines.

I also think my contents page also has a unique selling point. You can see that on the right I have 2 images with a nice border that is something that you don’t really see in other magazines. Continuing of from the border I have some music notes clashing with the column separators. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any bachata/reggaeton contents pages so I used an example of an R&B Vibe contents page instead. Most of them all look in design, thy have one main image as the background and the contents on top. As you can see my magazine looks really different to this. I separated all the sections for example the features and regulars, this way the audience will be able to quickly find what they want to read due to it being easy to navigate through.  I asked my peer what he thought about my page and how it attracted their attention. He said that title ‘Contents Page’ looked really good due to the font and how it merged with the column separators.

Due to being able to find any bachata or reggaeton double page spreads online I used a vibe magazine as reference instead. As you can see my magazine looks very different compared to the Vibe magazine. I tried to add something that would make my dps stand out and look really different compared to others, which can catch the users attention.

First of all I added music notes around the image. Throughout my research I didn’t see anything like this making it a unique selling point. I think that due to this it definitively catches the viewer’s attention, as it isn’t something that they’d usually see in a magazine.

I also included an enlarged quote that will stand out from the rest of the article and image. Throughout the whole magazine I kept the same colour scheme to make it continuous and not make it look odd. In this case the gold to show quotes from the artist.  However as you can see on the top left I used the colours yellow, blue and red. This is because it’s a Colombian magazine and these are the colours used in the flag. I think these 3 words stand out from the rest of the page.  First of all the background is a kind of cream colour and having these 3 vibrant colours there has a nice contrast. I got the idea to include the artists name due the Vibe magazine having something similar to this but they only included the artist’s initials.

Furthermore used Spanish within my article and headline which is uncommon in other magazine, if the user doesn’t understand the Spanish it could intrigue them to search it up and know what it means. Most magazines today are written in one langue but I needed to include something so that my double page spread looked different compared to others.

Final Front Cover

So, this is my final front cover. As you can see compared to my draft i changed the banner as it didn't really match the layout and looked odd. In addition I separated the text because on my draft it looked like one big paragraph, Personally, i quite like my front cover, it has all the key aspects that any other music magazine has and it shows that it's a Spanish magazine.

Contents page

This is my final contents page. Although the background is plain I added all the main conventions that a regular contents page should have like the logo, an image, page number and possibly an issue date. I also continued the same style and format from my dps and front cover with the fancy writing, curly style and the music notes.

Contents page sketches

This is my first design for my contents page, I quite like this as it's simple and easy navigate through but compared to other genres like mine it's too much. On the other hand i don't like how i have the images on both sides of the pages, I think it will look quite weird and messy. Due to this i think i may need to come up with a different idea that will separate images from the information.

This was my second idea for my contents page. I like this idea better because it will have the images on one side and the information on the other, this could make it look more neat, The information will also be split into sections so the user will be able to find what they want quickly. I think i will develop this idea into my final contents page.

Front Cover

This is my front cover for my magazine, I included all the aspects form most magazines like a banner, issue date etc. Personally i quite like this front cover, i think it stands out compared to all the other magazines that are currently being sold. I included quite a bit of Spanish so when the consumer sees this they should know that it's a Spanish magazine straight away. In addition to this, like my DPS i added some musical notes so the when the consumer sees this they should know it's based around music.

Front cover photoshoot

This was one of the designs i drew for my front cover. I liked the idea of the sketch however i feel like this image wouldn't of suit the genre of Bachata and the outcome of the image wasn't very pleasing. In addition to this it seems like the model isn't looking towards the camera so it's breaking a convention that it must use.
I wasn't pleased with this image due to 2 reasons. One being the pose, he looks really uptight/stiff and his facial expression doesn't really resemble any emotions. Second of all, the lighting isn't very good, it has a yellow like tone which i don't really like. I don't consider using this image for my front cover at all.
I like this image as it has a nice pose of the of the model tilting his head down as he looks the towards the camera. Furthermore, compared to the previous image he looks may more relaxed and loose so it doesn't look as forced. I thought about using this as my front cover image but i thought there could be a better/unique way to present my sell lines and headlines.
So this is my final image and the one I will use for my front cover. I got this idea from my sketches so i could present my headline with the artist pointing towards it so it will grab the viewers attention. I left some room on the top for the Masthead and trapline and around the side for the sell lines. As for mis-en-scene he had his diamond stud on and his ring which will use the burn tool on Photoshop to make it stand out. For the costume i had him with his shirt's top button undone and his jacket on so he looks smart/casual.

Front Cover And Masthead Designs

Front Cover Sketches

This is my first design for my front cover. I quite like this design since it will show my models face and him pointing to the headline. I will have the sell lines on the side with the '+' sign like in all the other magazines, the banner at the bottom and along the side some artists that will be featured within the magazine.  As for the background i could try and crop the model out, change the background to white and make the artists in black and white or i could try find a nice background.
For Mise-En-Scene i could have them in a blazers with their top button undone looking casual or possibly them into casual clothes because it's hard to desire what a typical bachata artists wears.
For this design i will have the model looking towards the camera as they raise up their arms to point towards headline. This will make the model pose intend of them just standing there looking bored. The issue date will be next to the masthead and the strapline onto of the masthead. The sell lines will be along the sides and like the previous design i will include a list of artists that will be included inside the magazine.
This is my final design. Unlike my previous designs the masthead will be on the left side of the page and written in enlarged, bold text to stand out form the rest of the magazine. The artists will also be pointing towards this so this can also hint the user that this is the headline. Like the previous designs the sell lines are around the sides but instead of writing featured artists i will include a competition to go see a live concert.

Masthead design

This is my masthead designs i came up with. I really like the first design. It's my magazine 'Bachaton' with my logo on top of the 'o'. This way my logo will be included within the masthead.  The logo includes 2 music signs engraved within the crown. This will show that the magazine will be based upon music and not gossip for example.

I didn't really like the second design i tried making the logo the 'o' in the title but it didn't look right due to the colour and the font used.

Overall i think i will use the first design since i think it looks really cool and the logo is included within the masthead.
