DPS Photoshop drafts and finished

Draft 1

This was my first draft of my double page spread.
- I liked this design however the lighting on the image looked a bit odd compared to the background that i chose so it didn't look well together.
- In addition i made a mistake on the masthead 'Life A Strife' instead of 'Life's a Strife'
- I had feedback from my teacher and peers. Some said that they weren't very attracted to the headline, they thought that i could of used a different font to make is look better and more attractive.
- On the other hand I really liked the 'TeL' as it's in yellow, blue, red- the Colombian flag colours. Due to this the viewer will see this and know that this article is based on a Spanish genre.

Draft 2

This was my second attempt for my double page spread. When i took this image i knew it was going to look good from the start.
- First of all it was raining on the day and as a result it made the seat wet and gave it some designs that it doesn't originally have. This made it attractive in design as it isn't something you'll see on a normal day.
- I also thought that the image relates to the article i wrote as he's a new artists that's trying to get himself known and it talks about how music played a part in his life.
- I really liked how i put the quote in next to the image of my model and i think the quote can relate to the model's pose as he's looking down and sitting sideways.
- Plus I included the Artists name Tyler Leon but i included the world 'El', By the reader seeing this they will know that that the magazine is based on spanish music. Not only this but when you translate this into Spanish it would read Tyler the Lion which sounds pretty cool.
- To make my artist and the seat stand out from the background I used gaussian blur to blur the wall out so it looks as if the camera focused on the artist only, then i went over him with the sharpen, burn and dodge tool to add light and shade to parts of him to match the natural lighting in the image.
- However i felt like the image was a bit too plain in design and that there was a bit more that i could do to improve it and make it look more attractive.

 Draft 3

After a few ideas i came up with adding a few music notes. Since i'm creating a music magazine and the article talks about how music changed my artists life i decided it would be a nice feature to include, not only does it reflect the article but it also makes the design look attractive and eye catching as it's been edited and it's quite abstract.
However after receiving feedback from my teacher and peers they thought that there wasn't enough to tell the viewer that this is a Spanish article besides the artist's name so i should come up with something to tell the reader that this article is based on spanish music.
I Was also missing key features and made some mistakes like the logo, the name of the journalist and photographer, typos, the columns weren't the same size in width and the page number on the left wasn't in the corner of the page.

Final Edit

This was my final outcome.
- I moved the artists's name to the top left corner and coloured each word in the Colombian flag colours so the viewer will know that the article is based on spanish music.
- I moved the quote into the bottom right corner and included enlarger quote marks to make it stand out and the reader will know that this is quote from the artist.
- I also changed the masthead from 'Life's A Strife' to 'Una Locura' which is spanish for 'It's Crazy'. Since the masthead is in spanish the viewer will again know that the article is based on Spanish music.
- Finally I changed/added previous things I needed to add from the previous draft like the Journalist, photographers name, etc...
- I made my logo a crown with the letters 'BT' and 2 music notes engraved in white within the centre. I decided to use a crown as my foreground because the it can relate both genres of bachata since it shows royalty and reggaeton since it shows the difference of status and jewellery because when people think of crowns we think of the colour gold.  Under the crown i included the magazines masthead 'Bachaton' just incase people don't know what 'BT' stands for. I added the 2 music notes because if someone sees a music note they will get the impression that the magazine will be based on music because why would there be 2 music notes if the magazine is based on films? It wouldn't make no sense.

Questionnaire/Results

To view/answer my questionnaire click on the link below:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FF2SL7T

Results
Do you know what bachata is?
4 people said yes
6 people said no
I sent this questionnaire to friends from Colombia as well as friends from other countries. The people that said yes probably know this genre due to their background.

How often do you buy magazines?
No one answered weekly or monthly.
3 people answered quarterly.
7 people answered never.
Already i can see that it's hard for magazines to be sold as 7/10 people don't buy magazines for me.

How much would you spend on a magazine?
For me it ranged from the price of £3-£5. I think i will make my magazine £4 as it's in-between both these answers.

What colours would complement my genre?
About everyone that answered this question said red, yellow, blue due to it being the Colombian flag and they all look good together if used well.
People also said black and white as it's the basic colours used for text.

What story do you expect to see in my magazine?
About everyone said an inspirational story or a life story which is what i planned to do so i think most people will like my article.

Does a front cover deter main whether you buy a magazine?
8 people said yes.
2 people said no.
Most of them said that if they see a front cover that looks rubbish then the content within is probably at the same standard. As a result my front cover has to look good for people to buy it form the looks of it.

'Bachaton' Good magazine name?
Everyone (10) said yes.
They said they like how it immediately shows what gene the magazine is going to be based on and how it's a short and snappy title.

Short or long articles?
9 people said short.
1 person said long.
Everyone that said short is basically because they don't like reading and when they read a long article they often find it boring or daze of.

My Double Page Spread Drawings

I really like my designs so i can't decide which one to chose. I think i'm going to ask my peers with one they like best and what their favourite aspect is. From this i will create another drawing with the most favourite aspects and combine them together to have a mixture of both.
Although i really liked my previous 2 designs i made a new one and i like this one more. It will have a close up shot of my model's face with a slight smile/serious face. Next to it will be a quote from the artist so when the viewer sees it they could relate to it and could cause them to read on to see what the article is about.
On the other side there will be the masthead of the article, the introduction, the main article itself, the logo and magazine name and the artist's logo.
I decided to use the colour gold as it represents royalty and also my questionnaire results shows that when people think of Colombia they think of the flag yellow, blue, red. Perhaps on the other side i should include some red somewhere to include 2 colours that can relate back to the music's origin.
In addition i really like the close up shot of half of his face as it can relate to my article about him not being well known and that he's starting from zero. By only showing half oh his face it can connote that he's still got a lot more to show of himself as he's only starting of and that we can be expecting to see more of him.

Double Spread Page Analysis

This is my double spread magazine analysis. Again I wasn't able to find any bachata double spread articles so instead i did R&B.

My Double Spread page article

Title: Life's a Strife
Nothing's easy to accomplish in the world but it's even worse when you come from a different country and try to create a big name for yourself. Life's been a strife for this young man but it's all been worth it.

It's was a cold winters eve in London where the new Bachata artist Tyler sang his song on stage in front of hundreds of people. The lights were shinning, the snowflakes were slowly drifting down in the chilly breeze but most of all...the fans were cheering!

"It was truly amazing!" he shouted as the crowd cheered his name in the background. He never thought it would of been possible for someone like him to be on the road to success specially at his age. Tyler is only 18 years old and comes from South America, Colombia- Pereira. He left his country and his family for a new start and the one shot he's always wanted. He dreamt of being a footballer when he was younger due to having a passion for sport but when he reached the age of 15 he went on the show 'Colombia Tiene Talento' (Colombia Has Talent). After being eliminated in the semi finals he met the famous artists Romeo Santos and was told he was was going to make it far and that's what Tyler is aiming to do but slow and steady wins the race.

"It's been a tough ride" for Tyler, he hasn't had an easy life. During his life early life in Colombia his parents divorced and he relied on his mum for support and most of the things he needed. Ever since this it had a great impact on his life causing him to have a lot of depression but worst of all went wrong in school, rumours went around causing him to get bullied, 'I remember people telling me that i wasn't going to get far in life and that i should just give up'.  Due to this he didn't have the best education as he had other things going on his mind so he couldn't get a well payed job to support his mum.

'I couldn't bare seeing my mum crying in the night, I had to do something. I'd see her sitting up on her bed crying in the dark as she wiped tears with her sleeve. I'd come over sit next to her and wipe the tears as they ran down her cheeks and tell her that everything's going to be alright as i lifted up her chin and smiled. She'd look at me with her sparkling eyes, smile back and give me a hug.

After him seeing this he started busking on the street and noticed that a lot of people complementing his voice and that he should try do something with it. It was at this point that he had the idea of leaving the football career behind and to open a brand new door and here we are, Started from the bottom now he's here. 'Life's a strife' he said but you got to work and work till' you finally reach your goal but most of all, don't let anyone tell you what you can and can't do.

Music Video Analysis

Aventura- 'La Boda'
I decided to do this music feeling due to it showing basic iconography of the genre Bachata for example the romance and heartbreak and feeling i've been feeling and, it also shows the the main aspects that makes bachata such as the guitar and the back up singer in the music video. The song was released with the album 'Gods Project' in 2005 that got 4x platinum records.
The translation for 'La Boda' is the wedding, it's about a couple that's about to get married but the man Romeo Santos steps in to stop it and tells their love story as shown in the flash backs in the video.

Throughout the video it shows it goes back into the chapel when the couple where getting married however it's in black and white,. This could convey the idea that it's really depressing and upsetting for the main artists to be going through this. To create a bit of contrast to this they included flashbacks to when the artist was together with the lady, however instead of the image being in black and white they put in colour. This could suggest that there was both of them were in love and that they were happy together but once they split up both of their lives turned upside down. The video also includes the main images of a church. Due to the genre of bachata coming from Colombia, Dominican Republic most of those country is Catholic/Christian so as a result they included this the image of the church to represent this and that couples should be getting married in a church instead of a registration hall...maybe.

In addition to this throughout the video you can see the rest of the group singing and playing the guitar in the background. The guitar is the main aspect that makes bachata because it give the music the feel. Personally without the guitar playing in the background the music just wouldn't be the same as it doesn't have the same feel and romance between the audience and the artist.
Furthermore the music video also shows the use of shots such as wide shots to show where the music video takes place and who's the main characters involved in the video.

The video also includes mid shots to try and show the facial expressions of the artists and characters to show their emotions and what they could be feeling. Due to this people seeing this video could try and relate to it as they might be in the same situation as shown.

I believe the target audience for this song would be 16+ because once you get to the age of 16 you can start feeling the effect of love. And it could also be aimed at couple that broke up but you want to get back together due to you still having feelings for each other.

The Mise-On-Scene for this music are very well shown in this video in my opinion. As the music video being called 'The wedding' (in English) the bride and groom are both wearing outfits that you would wear when you're getting married like the white, long, pretty reds for the bride and the smart, buttoned up suit for the groom. The video is also taken in various locations but the one that most stands out would be the church because that's where most Catholic/Christian couples get married together but, there are also other locations such as the school that relate to when the artist is talking about when they were in school and how he used to 'study her body' which is a metaphors because in a school you study subjects and for him to say that he must of loved her very much and her house when he used to sneak up her house without her parents finding out and her dog barking at him. All of these scenes include different outfits such as a blazer and jeans in the church because when you go to church you're supposed to go dressed smart, a white dressing gown for the girl when they have flash back at her house, and many more.  As a result to the colour scheme in the church become in black and white it could suggest depression as you can't see the bright, luminous colours anymore, everything becomes black and white which could suggest depression or that they're upset at their actions.

Aventura- 'Dile Al Amor'
This is also a good example of the genre of bachata as it shows the whole group in the shot showing what makes this genre such as singing, playing the guitar, bass guitar, etc. The name 'Dile Al Amor' means 'Tell Love'. It's about the main protagonist Romeo Santos falling in love with numerous gils but at the end of the day the girls don't appreciate it and they fall in love with someone else so at the end of the day the main artist gives up and decides that he doesn't need love in his love said at the end of the song.

Just like the previous song 'La Boda' this song also shows the main iconography that represent the genre of bachata such as the band playing their instruments as well as the romance and heartbreak which are typical themes that this genre touch upon. In addition to this people believe that when you fall in love you where hit with a Cupid arrow, this video also represents this by the lady hitting the main protagonist with arrows and every time she fails she slows out a candle until she gets to the third candle and decides enough is enough and he doesn't want love in his life.

Magazine Case Study

As a result to not finding any magazines based on bachata i took the decision to review the magazine Vibe as it covers R&B/Hip-Hop/Rap which is what my magazine is based upon.

Genre research

Bachata
Bachata can be translated a party or a good time.
It's an Afro Latino genre of music that originated in the Dominican Republic in the early parts of the 20th Century.
It became extremely popular around country sides and neighbourhoods of the Dominican Republic.
The music's topic often include romance, specially tales of heartbreak or sadness.
The typical bachata consists of five instruments: a lead guitar, a rhythm guitar, an electric bass guitar, bongos and a guira.

Reggaeton
The genre was invented and known in Puerto Rico where it got its name.
Most reggaeton artists are from Puerto Rico.
Reggaeton is a music genre that has its roots in Latin and Caribbean music.
It's sound takes example from the Reggae in Spanish from Panama.
After it's mainstream exposure in 2004 it spread to North American, European, Asian and African audiences.

Contents Page Analysis

As a result to doing World Music is was extremely hard for me to find a contents page and i wasn't able to find one. Due to this I chose genres that were relatively close to the genres i was doing. Bachata can relate to R&B due to it's lyrics and purpose and Hip-Hop can relate to reggaeton because it has similar lyrics and sometimes a similar rhythm/beat.

Another Front Cover Analysis

Somos Magazine
Somos Magazine is made in Peru.
The front cover is pretty basic. it includes the the masthead, a heading, a main image and the sell lines.
The masthead is written in large, red, bold joint up writing which stands out from the rest of the front cover due to its overly large size.
Furthermore the main image relates to the heading 'Santa Bachata' Santa means holy in English and in the main image you can see the group Aventura with their hands together as if they were praying. In addition you can see the group giving direct eye contact with the viewer which could cause a viewer to open the magazine and look through it.
The heading is also written in large, upercase letters which can suddenly inform the audience that this will be the main article. Half of the heading is also written in black but the genre of the music is in red. This could attract an audience that likes bachata because they will instantly spot the the genre included in the main article.
The sell lines are in uppercase letters and like the heading half of it is written in red and the other half is written in black. The subtext is in basic black writing. This allows the audience to easily read what articles will be included within the magazine.

Planning notes for my magazine

My magazine will be based around Latin music called bachata and a reggaeton.

My target audience will be the youth and general public between the ages of 15-28. The magazines will be sold everywhere however it will be focused more towards Elephant and Castle due to lots of Latin people living around that area. It can also be targeted to men/women in love, who speak Spanish or just like listening to this genre of music overall.

My magazine will be called 'Bachaton'. I decided to name it this because my magazine will be based on music called bachata and reggaeton so i mixed them together and i came up with this name. it connotes that the magazine will include this type of genre straight away.

My masthead will look like this.

I decided to go with this design because it's

I will use a head and shoulder shot for my main image on the front page. For the context page will will be a range of wide shots and possibly some  mid shots.I will take my shots in the dance studio because that's where it's where you can dance and there's a mirror across the side which will look pretty cool in the image i have in mind.

My model will be wearing a black blazer with a coloured shirt buttoned up to the 2nd to top button so it's shows class but it isn't too formal. It will have a purple fade/wash effect due to the colour purple representing passion/love, etc.
Furthermore for my double spread i'm thinking of having a wide shot of a couple dancing together as they smile and look towards the camera. The man will be wearing a white shirt with his top button undone and black trousers while the girl wears a red shirt and a skirt.

'Avenura's back!' This would be one of my sell lines since they haven't release an album since 2009 so if the audience likes bachata they will definitively know this group and will like their music.
'He's really the Prince'. This will also be another sell line because the Artist Prince Royce has recently released a new album so i might say that there's an interview included in the magazine to see what he has to say about it.

I will also include a competition to get people to buy the magazine and to have a chance of winning some free stuff. For example I might give say 'Have a chance to win tickets to see Romeo Santos Live'. As a result people will buy the magazine as they may have a chance of winning a ticket that could be worth a £100 for the price of £1.00.

My double spread page will be about a young adult that is very talented at singing and song writing bachata however he isn't well known. As a result the double page spread page will be an interview about his life, his struggles and how he got to where he is now. My model will be leaning again a brick wall as his body faces forward but his face faces the camera.

My student magazine Photoshop work

I'm really pleased with the outcome of my magazine. I asked some friends and all of them said it looked really good.
I really like my contents page. Although it's pretty basic it's really easy to navigate and it includes the conventions of a typical magazine to buy from a shelf.

Student magazine photos

I aslo like this photo however i feel like the the next image has better lighting.
I like this image as my front cover because it shows a group of students all studying a book.
This is an image for my context page. I like this image because it shows 3 young gentleman walking down the corridor together. Furthermore they all have eye contact with Ben on the left.
I like this image but the there is no eye contact with Tyler in the middle and he's laughing towards the floor.
I don't really like this image because it seems like I don't have eye contact towards the audience.

I would use this shot but it's too far away and i'd prefer to use a close up image for the context page or for my sub image.
I think i'm going to use this image overall because it's a closer shot of me. Furthermore it shows me smiling and having a thumbs up suggesting that St Angela's is a really good school and college.

I like this image better than the previous one because it shows more going on between the group. For example because Tyler has his hand up it could suggest he's giving his opinion to the group.
